Chapter 16
When Amy woke up, it took her a few moments to remember. She had been kidnapped and thrown into this cold, dark, airless dungeon. But it was no longer completely dark. A thin strip of light indicated the outline of the door she had only felt before. She jumped up, almost tangling herself up in the blankets, and went over to it. She could not see anything through the gap, which was too narrow, but the mere thought of light outside gave her courage. She screamed for help, but soon her voice faltered, and her shouts became moans interrupted by sobs. Shivering with cold, she made her way back to the pile of blankets.
After a while, her tears had dried. She needed to stop panicking and start thinking. She needed to keep her strength up. When had she last eaten? John and her mum had asked her round for a take-away after the removal van had gone, but she had declined. Why on earth had she done that? Then she remembered. Because she was in a strop. She had sensed their concern at her being on her own in a new flat and wanted to prove to them that she was a big girl. If she had joined them, she might never have had that stupid idea of going back to the flat late at night on her own. She would not be hereâ¦
âStop it,â she told herself. There was no point in dwelling on what could have been. She was here now. But what day was this? Monday? Or Tuesday? All she knew was that she was starving. She wriggled out of the blanket, fumbled in the darkness for the parcel and unwrapped it. The ham smelt delicious. She took a large bite of the soft bread. Feeling better already, she put it down and opened the flask. Hot chocolate. Carefully, she poured some into the screw-on cup and took a small sip. It was not too hot, so she drained the makeshift cup in one big gulp. It did not take her long to finish the sandwich and she was about to tear open the bag of crisps when a terrible thought occurred to her. What if Andrew, or whoever the kidnapper was, did not come back? What if he had been killed or was on the run, unable or unwilling to come back and bring her more food or let her go? What if nobody found out that she was here? McCord, she thought, and that immediately calmed her down. McCord would come looking for her, and he and Calderwood would figure out where she was. Just how long would it take? She put down the bag of crisps.
Curled up in her blankets, she stared at the rectangle of light. What if the kidnapper did come back, but not in order to bring food or to release her, but to kill her? She had not seen or heard anything that would help her identify him, but
